  • Mount Takao Fall Foliage Festival 2019
    (Takao-san momiji matsuri 高尾山もみじまつり)

    1 – 30 November 2019
    Mount Takao

A one-hour train ride and easily accessible from Tokyo, Mount Takao, standing 600 meters above sea level, is a pleasant getaway from the city, with nice hiking trails.

Takao-san (“san” means a mountain or a hill in Japanese) is also one of the most popular spots to see autumn colors in the greater Tokyo area.

    Mount Takao

The hill is covered with a rich variety of vegetation including old beeches, giving shelter to birds and small animals.

Close to the hill-top stand attractive buildings of Takao-san Yakuo-in, a Buddhist temple established in 744.

For a hike, there are a total of seven trails – ranging from easier ones, perfect for a “shinrin-yoku” (forest bathing), to others fit for those with more physical stamina.

Momiji matsuri (Fall Foliage Festival) 2019

In autumn Mount Takao shines in shades of deep burgundy, pink, bronze, orange and yellow.

To celebrate autumn’s colours, Momiji matsuri (Fall Foliage Festival) will take place around the hill, during the month of November 2019. Other than the colourful foliage spectacle, the festival offers extra attractions for visitors on weekends and national holidays in November (*2019 events and venues t.b.c.):

    • live stage opposite Kiyotaki Station (清滝駅) on the funicular line
    • sake tasting and sale of kokeshi dolls near Juichi-chome-chaya Station (十一丁目茶屋駅).

When to see autumn colours 2019

The best time to see the autumn leaves on Mount Takao usually falls in mid-November through the end of the month. But as always, the timing depends on the amount of sunlight, humidity and temperature of the year.

With regard to day of week, we recommend you visit the site on weekdays if your programme is flexible. (Yes, even if the festival events take place on weekends…).

Mount Takao is popular with hikers in autumn. To this are added an increasing number of overseas visitors of recent years – thanks also to the stars granted by the green Michelin guide. And thus it happens that the trails are literally congested on weekends during the peak period in the second half of November.

Here is an additional advice: arrive early in the morning, say by 9 am, should you visit the place in high season.

    Best spots for foliage

    The best spots include:

    • the strip along the funicular line
    • the surroundings of Yakuo-in temple
    • the hilltop and the Momiji-dai observation deck (with a view of Mt Fuji, if weather sides with you).

Not scared of heights? Take chairlifts to have a picturesque view of coloured leaves down below.
