Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) is a world-renowned ukiyo-e master, famed for his landscape prints depicting various places of Japan, such as in the series “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road” and “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo”. He has been a source of inspiration for many artists around the world, including Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.

The Ota Memorial Museum of Art, a museum specializing in the art of ukiyo-e, will soon hold a great retrospective exhibition of Hiroshige to coincide with the 160th anniversary of his demise.

Wonderful works will be selected for the exhibition from the museum’s collection, of which Hiroshige’s works in fact constitute the largest part.

    The Hiroshige blue

“Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road: Dusk at Numazu” is the only work in the Tokaido series that features a moonlit landscape.

It is Prussian blue, a Western pigment imported from abroad, that was used to shade the evening sky and the river.

A costume party in the Edo period?

In this work of Hiroshige, you can spot strange people such as a man wearing an octopus costume.

This ukiyo-e depicts a scene of “Nijurokuya-machi”, an event of the moon-viewing on the Twenty-sixth night of the Seventh month (of the luni-solar calendar), held during the Edo period.
