  • “Real-life Immersive” is teamLab’s new formula
Two art gardens opened at teamLab Planets

    teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM

To celebrate the third anniversary of the “teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM“, the digital art collective teamLab opened on 2 July 2021 its Garden Area, the latest addition to the immersive art complex located in Toyosu, in the neighbourhood of Tokyo’s new wholesale market.

    TeamLab Planets

The teamLab Planets is a complex with a set of four large-scale digital art installations among others.

The bottom line of experience here is walking barefoot. You remove your shoes and feel the water underneath it and also walk around in a shallow pool. Using that bodily sensation, along with ambient music and aromas, is a device to get even more connected to art works.

Beyond digital art: teamLab’s new formula is “real-life immersive”

The digital art installations are inside the building, which is dimly lit to make the best of light effects.

Two art gardens newly opened are outside the building, bathed in natural light. The contrast is striking.

These are not just art gardens. They are immersive. And they are as though real-life versions of teamLab’s digital installations, in which you become part of the art. In short, delightful, interactive and fun; but also contemplative, sort of deepening a contemporary “Zen” experience.

Two gardens in the teamLab Planets

◆ Garden of orchids floating in the air

Title: Floating Flower Garden: 花と我と同根、庭と我と一体 / Floating Flower Garden: Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One. teamLab, 2015, Interactive Kinetic Installation, Endless, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi.

This is a very special garden filled with an overwhelming number – more than 13,000- of real orchids. The delicate orchids blossom in mid-air, creating a colourful maze of floral patterns. Their reflection on the floor creates a bit of trompe l’oeil effect.

It is as though a piece of teamLab’s immersive floral art is translated into a real world, a kind of live-action of their digital art. You can be literally immersed in the orchids here.

Toshiyuki Inoko, the collective’s founder says:

“The orchids in this garden are interactive. They go up in the air in presence of people to create some space, then go down again when they are gone.

When viewing cherry blossoms, there is a moment when a viewer is no longer certain if it is he/she that sees the blossoms or it is the blossoms that see him/her – like a Zen saying goes.

This art work would induce such a sense of unity with flowers.

On the earth there are a variety of orchids. They are a symbol of biodiversity of plants and fauna, but are also endangered species.

In this garden, there are a variety of orchids, producing scents in relation to their pollinator insects. Many of them are nocturnal, and you can smell different fragrances here at night.”

◆ Moss garden with light and sound emitting sculptures

Title: 呼応する小宇宙の苔庭 – 固形化された光の色, Sunrise and Sunset / Moss Garden of Resonating Microcosms – Solidified Light Color, Sunrise and Sunset. teamLab, 2021, Interactive Digital Installation, Endless, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi.

Another work added to the complex is also a garden with natural light, using real moss and moss balls.

On a gentle lush carpet of moss stand a group of metallic sculptures of a mysterious shape – Humpty-Dumpty like, roly-poly toy-like…

When you touch or shake these guys, they emit light and also sounds pleasant to the ear.

The garden feels like a nostalgic folktale, but the next moment it feels like stepping into another dimension. Welcome back to the future.

After sunset, the garden offers a completely different view with the luminous sculptures.
