Highlights of “The Rose of Versailles” exhibition

The Rose of Versailles”, originally published between 1972 and 1973, is a shojo manga (a comic genre “for girls”) set in the French court before and around the time of the French Revolution.

The exhibition opens at Tokyo City View’s soaring entrance overlooking Tokyo from 250 meters above sea level. The prelude evokes the setting of manga staged in the Palace of Versailles, with four of its characters welcoming visitors – Oscar, Marie Antoinette, Axel von Fersen and André Grandier.

The following chapters will highlight the birth of the manga and its derivative works, in particular the Takarazuka Revue and the TV animation series.

Star attractions include approximately 180 pieces of original drawings and illustrated works by Riyoko Ikeda.
