Egon Schiele from the Collection of the Leopold Museum
Young Genius in Vienna 1900
26 January – 9 April 2023
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will soon host a show featuring the Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele (1890-1918), composed mostly of works lent by the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
Highlights of the Egon Schiele show
The show will shed light on the work and life of Egon Schiele, one of the most influential artists in modern art, who lived in the fin-de-siècle Vienna before his early death at 28.
A rebel genius, Schiele shook up Vienna with his expressive work charged with eroticism, agony and anxiety.
A total of 50 works of Shiele’s self-portraits, portraits and landscape paintings will go on display at the Tokyo museum.
Those will be complemented by about 70 works of his contemporaries, such as Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Richard Gerstl and Oskar Kokoschka.
