Hachijo-jima Freesia Festa
25 March – 8 April 2018
Hachijo-jima, 1 hour away from the Metropolis
A major difference from Paris or New York, the administrative region of Tokyo consists of a number of subtropical islands. One of them is Hachijo-jima, located about 55 minutes away by airplane (or overnight by boat), some 300 kilometers south of the Metropolis.
In spring, the air of Hachijo-jima is scented with the sweet fragrance of flowers. It would be an excellent time for your holidays, getting away from the bustle of Tokyo, with the option of dipping in an onsen (natural hot spring) with a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean!
Freesia Festa 2018
The island’s annual freesia festival will be held for a couple of weeks from late March through early April. The main events will take place at the foot of Hachijo-Fuji, or “Mount Fuji of Hachijo (Island)”. There, some 350,000 freesias will go into bloom beautifully in yellow, white, pink and purple.
On the festival programme: free picking of freesia flowers (up to 20 freesias per person), open-air tea ceremonies looking over the flower field (fees for food and drink extra) and concerts of Hachijo taiko (Japanese drums). You can also try wearing the traditional kimono called “ki-hachijo” (from Friday to Sunday during the festival; reservation required). This pretty kimono in yellow with lattice patterns is made of silk, hand-woven and coloured with vegetable dyes.
Freesia Infiorata 2018
Every year, “Freesia Infiorata” concludes this colorful festival. The visitors can participate in the creation of infioratas (flower carpets), under the direction of an expert artist. Freesias and other plants of the island will be used for the infiorata making. Not to miss also on the occasion is the island gourmet festa (“Shima-meshi Festa”).
