    Tanabata: the Star Festival

Tanabata or the Star Festival is traditionally held in the evening on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunisolar calendar. Legend holds that Vega and Altair, representing lovers separated against their will by the Milky Way, can meet only once a year on this day.

Today Tanabata is cerebrated either around 7 July or 7 August according to the Gregorian calendar, with decoration of a bamboo branch to hang wishes written on strips of paper.

    Asagaya Tanabata Festival

Asagaya Tanabata Festival, which has been held since 1954, is known for its unique and vibrant Star Festival decorations. Every year, colourful streamers and, above all, hand-made papier-mache figures decorate the arcade ceiling.

A variety of characters will be created and displayed by shop owners and local residents, by adults and children, according to fashion of the times.

It is quite fun to take a stroll along the arcade in a festive mood, while tasting delicious snacks here and there, and buying nice things along the way.
