Train Suite Shikishima, a brand-new “cruise train” will be launched in May 2017 by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). A variety of tour packages, ranging from one to three nights, will be available to experience local culture, mainly in the north-eastern region of Tohoku and Hokkaido.

Chic and elegant, Shikishima is a five-star hotel on wheels. All compartments are suites. The train is designed in contemporary style infused with Japanese elements. Its large windows allow passengers to appreciate the sweeping landscape. Sophisticated, seasonal cuisine will be served on board. The hospitality crew will attend to guests. Ueno Station, the departure point in Tokyo, will soon be donned with a dedicated salon, just like an airport business lounge.

Reservation will be made by a lottery drawing among the applicants. Aapplications are closed for the tours up to August 2017, and the average number of requests was more than six times greater than the capacity. “Shikishima Suite”, the only duplex suite with a cypress bathtub, set a record high of 76 requests for its three-night travel departing on 1 May 2017. Price: 950,000 yen or approximately 9,200 US dollars (exchange rate of October 2016) per person.

Applications for the period between September and November 2017 will be open from 1 November 2016 until 6 January 2017. To fill in the form, ask for help of a Japanese friend, since the website provides information only in the Japanese language (as of October 2016). Once on board, however, English assistance will be provided by the hospitality crew. Good luck!
