Lucerne Festival Ark Nova 2017 in Tokyo Midtown
19 September – 4 October 2017
To bring music to people devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. That was the goal of the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, which has organized special concerts, bringing the world’s first mobile concert hall “Ark Nova”. Six and a half years after the disaster, Ark Nova is coming to Tokyo Midtown, with a series of special events and guests, to refresh the memories and solidarity through the arts.
◆ Lucerne Festival Ark Nova
Ark Nova was born from a deep desire of Michael Hefliger, executive director of the Lucerne Festival, to help contribute to overcome the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan, by bringing music and hope to the most afflicted area. The answer was the world’s first inflatable mobile concert hall named “Ark Nova”.
The hall was designed by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and the British sculptor Anish Kapoor. A huge eggplant-like dome is made of PVC-coated polyester membrane, which can be inflated by air in one hour, and then folded again and transported by truck. It is 18 meters high, 30 meters wide and 36 meters in depth, seating up to some 500 people. Sunlight passes through the walls like stained glass, tinting the inside in dark pink shades.
Some of the benches used in the hall were made of wood from cedar trees, at Zuigan-ji Temple in Matsushima, felled by the tsunami. These benches were created by local residents at a workshop to pass down the memories to the future.
Between 2013 and 2015, a total of three special events of the Lucerne Festival were held at Matsushima, Sendai and Fukushima in the Tohoku region.
