Born in Koyasan, Wakayama Prefecture in 1936, Kazuo Umezu grew up in Nara Prefecture.
He started drawing manga in the 4th grade of elementary school.

When he was in the 3rd grade of senior high school, he made his debut publishing “別世界 (Betsu-sekai)” and “森の兄妹 (Mori-no-kyodai)” from the publisher Tomobook.

Putting out a series of horror manga in an idiosyncratic style, such as “へび少女 (Hebi-shojo)”, “猫目小僧 (Cat Eyed Boy)” and “漂流教室 (The Drifting Classroom) – for which he won the Shogakukan Manga Award – Umezu came to be dubbed “the God of horror manga”.

He produced a number of hits ranging from “Makoto-chan” to “14歳 (Juyonsai)”, many of which became a cultural phenomenon in the country.

In 2018, Umezu won the Heritage Award (Prix du patrimoine) at the Angoulême International Comics Festival (Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angoulême) for his “わたしは真悟 (Watashi-ha-Shingo or I am Shingo [in French, Je suis Shingo])”.

A multi-talented cartoonist, Umezu wears many hats – movie director and singer, among others.
