17 May – 30 June 2019
Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo
The firefly requires an environment with clean streams or rivers. So in urban areas, it’s been long a thing of the past to see “hotaru” (fireflies) flickering in the gathering darkness.
But in the Japanese capital, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo’s spacious garden provides an ideal habitat and thus an opportunity to see, in a natural setting, a number of fireflies blinking in unison.
Fireflies illuminate the garden of Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo
Over half a century, Japan’s fireflies have been threatened to extinguish with environmental degradation.
In that context, the hotel has made efforts, since 1954, to create a natural environment in its spacious garden to nurture Genji-botaru or the Japanese fireflies.
As the result of the project, swarms of fireflies – as many as 500 to 600 fireflies per day at the peak period – light up at night in the garden.
While the general public is not allowed to wander in and about, the garden is opened to the hotel guests and users to see the natural light show for free.
