The 38th Asakusa Samba Carnival Parade Contest
31 August 2019 (Sat)
Dancers in fancy dress with feathers and multi-coloured floats proceed through Asakusa, to the samba beat, even though without revellers.
Asakusa Samba Carnival Parade Contest is a grand samba parade and competition, organized annually on the last Saturday of August. Since the first edition in 1981, the Asakusa event has been developed into one of the premier samba parades that take place in the northern hemisphere.
Never mind if it is held in mid-summer, and not as Mardi Gras. The participating teams follow the Rio de Janeiro style and the atmosphere is just great.
Last year, about 5,000 energetic performers, with all their glamour and Brazilian costumes, attracted and mesmerized some 500,000 enthusiastic crowds.
