  • Matcha Beer Garden

    Matcha Beer Garden” is a popular summer event held at Green Tea Restaurant 1899 (read “ichi-hachi-kyu-kyu”) Ochanomizu. The restaurant, located on the first floor of Hotel Ryumeikan Ochanomizu, offers Japanese tea and washoku menus (Japanese cuisine, including “cha-ryori”, or dishes using Japanese tea).

    For the annual beer garden, the café-restaurant (tea restaurant, precisely) offers beers in shades of deep green, black, amber and gold, blended with matcha and other natural Japanese tea as ingredients. For the 2017 edition, ten kinds of “tea beers”, a “matcha wine” and 13 dishes of “tea cuisine” are lined up.

    Beers with matcha and hoji-cha, such as three matcha beers (including one alcohol-free) and Hoji-cha black beer, are already familiar for the regulars.

    This year’s new releases are beverages using “wa-kocha”, the black tea (English-style tea) made of Japanese tea leaves. Flowery aroma and sweetness of black tea marry with hoppy bitterness of beer (“Wa-kocha Beer”) and black beer (“Wa-kocha Black Beer”).

    Matcha Wine”, an original cocktail of 1899, is also refreshing. Surprising? Herby bitterness of matcha delicately merges into fruity sweetness of white wine.

    To accompany the tea-flavoured beverages, 13 dishes of cha-ryori (“tea cuisine”) including 6 new ones are offered. To complete your novel experience full of tea flavours, try one of four “tea sweets”, including “Pudding au matcha”.
