  • Grand Sumo Tournament in September

    Kokugi-kan Stadium, Ryōgoku, Tokyo

    One of the Six Grand Tournaments is held at the Kokugi-kan (国技館) Stadium, Ryogoku in eastern Tokyo, for fifteen days in the second half of September. Tickets can be purchased on-line in advance at http://sumo.pia.jp/en/. If regular tickets are sold out, less expensive arena seats are available directly from the Box Office of the stadium on the tournament days. The stadium opens at 8 a.m. The matches start at 8:30 a.m. from the lower division (up to 幕下 makushita), followed by the second division (十両jyūryō) around 14:15 p.m. and the top division (幕内 makuuchi) around 16 p.m. Feel the excitement amplifying with the appearance of higher-ranked popular wrestlers and champions (横綱yokozuna). The day culminates in the bow ritual performed on the ring (土俵 dohyō) just before 18 p.m. Watch also the fashionably dressed gyoji (行司), often translated as the referee, but who is the MC of the tournament.
