  • Moon viewing (tsukimi-no-kai)

    3 -5 October 2017
    Mukojima Hyakkaen

O-tsukimi (“moon viewing”) is a tradition of appreciating a big, round golden moon in the autumn sky and also a time of thanksgiving for the harvest. It takes place in mid-autumn on “jugoya”, which is the fifteenth night of the eighth month of the lunar-solar calendar.

The “jugoya” comes on 4 October this year, and the full moon arrives two days later on 6 October.

If the custom is somehow obsolete in urban households today, it is possible to feel the autumn in a traditional atmosphere in Tokyo, watching the moon, at Mukojima Hyakkaen. This pleasant Japanese garden, created during the Edo period in the early 19th century, is full of typical Japanese autumn flowers at this time of the year, such as pink hagi (lespédèzes), yellow ominaeshi (Patrinia scabiosifolia) and violet kikyos (Japanese bellflowers).

On the occasion of o-tsukimi, the garden will extend its opening hours exceptionally. Have a pleasant evening of the Harvest Moon, with the light of picture lanterns and the sound of live koto music, weather permitting.
