Koganei Park, located along the former Tamagawa aqueduct (which provided drinking water to Edo, the former Tokyo), is a spacious park, covering an area of about 80 hectares. The park is an excellent place for relaxation and leisure, with grassy grounds, wooded areas, a cherry-tree orchard, playgrounds for kids and grounds for barbecue (reservation required), archery and baseball. The Edo-Tokyo Open-air Architectural Museum is located on the same premises (admission extra; did you know that the museum exhibits of historical houses and restored buildings had been an inspiration to Miyazaki’s film “Spirited Away”?)

Koganei Park is also one of the most popular sites in Tokyo for viewing cherry blossoms. About 1,700 cherry trees (such as the species of Yama-zakura, Sato-zakura and Somei Yoshino) will go into pink-and-white blossoms for about one month. Of them, 430 trees are found in the “sakura-no-sono” (cherry-tree orchard, 2.9 hectares).

Every year, the park hosts “Koganei Sakura Festival” to mark the arrival of spring amid the stunningly beautiful Yoshino cherry blossoms.
