Asahi Shrine, Roppongi
8 -9 July 2016
Asahi Shrine, a Shinto sanctuary located on an alley off the busy Roppongi Crossing, will host an annual physalis market (hozuki ichi ほおずき市) again this year.
The event is held on a small scale, in a friendly atmosphere, and not tourism-oriented. Extra-large orange lantern flowers light up joyfully the shrine precincts for two days. The ornamental plants are brought in from Hinokage Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, more than 800 km away from Tokyo.
The Hinokage municipality, situated in a mountainous area of Kyushu, is rich in nature and known as a forest therapy centre. The surrounding region is also famed for kagura (Shinto dance and music dedicated to the deities).
During the physalis market, performers from Hinokage Town will stage kagura twice daily at the shrine. You are welcome to watch the performance for free (beware, though: the venue is a rather small and it is a place of worship).
